Description

Presenters: Kavita Avula, Psy.D and Sabrina Crawford, Ph.D

Two mental health therapists of color will discuss their experiences with navigating the complex world of being bicultural in the United States. Implications for creating safe, color-conscious, and respectful professional relationships with both clients and colleagues will be shared.

After this conference participants will better understand the strong impact of micro-aggressions committed by the unsuspecting group psychotherapist and have a greater appreciation for within-group differences when considering cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Course Description

This training will increase cultural competence and awareness in group psychotherapists. With a strong emphasis on self-disclosure, two psychologists of color will share their stories of navigating the experience of being Brown and Black in the United States. This will include personal experiences of microaggressions throughout their development including in their own personal experience with seeking help. This engaging, interactive training will begin with a didactic awareness-raising introduction and culminate in group discussion with the attendees. Participants will be asked to share reflections and reactions including examples from their own personal lives and clinical experiences. The group will be guided towards taking accountability for impact on marginalized group members, a sense of shared responsibility in confronting implicit bias, and hope for working through microaggressions and healing ruptures.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will:

  1. Reflect on their own culture and upbringing and examine its impact on their outlook and cultural assumptions.
  2. Learn to recognize well-meant comments that have the potential to offend.
  3. Distinguish between helpful generalizations and stereotypes that we use to categorize people, being able to use the first, and avoid the latter.
  4. Become aware of 2-3 ways in which cultural awareness affects the therapist-client relationship, and potentially, health outcomes.

3.5 CEs will be given for FULL attendance.

A link to participate in the Zoom Meeting will be distrubuted upon registration.
